Core Concepts Overview

Actions: Adding and editing data

Adding actions your users can perform in the application.

Actions make your app interactive. Users can do more than view data: they can create it, update it, and act on it. Softr has three types of actions:

  • Data actions: Let users add, update, or delete records directly in the app.

  • Navigation actions: Send users to another page, scroll to a section, or open an external link.

  • Advanced actions: Run more complex operations, such as an API call that triggers an action in an external system (for example, Zapier or Make).

For actions that run in the background, with no user clicking a button, use workflows.

Data actions

Data actions let users manage records directly in your app. You configure them on dynamic blocks such as List, Grid, Kanban, Table, Calendar, Inbox, and Item details.

Example: In a Sales CRM, users can edit client details and log activity with clients.

A contact's details page with Edit and Delete actions, and a Log activity button

These actions send users to a page or an external destination. They work on both dynamic and static blocks.

Example: In a Sales CRM app, clicking an account manager’s name in a list can Open details page to show their profile.

Clicking a name opens the details page

Advanced actions

These actions cover more complex operations and custom integrations.

  • Block-specific actions: Some blocks offer extra actions that fit their purpose. For example, the Kanban block lets users drag cards between columns. See the documentation of each block for details.

  • Export/Download: Export the visible records as PDF or CSV.

  • Call API: Send a custom API call. (Available for Professional, Business, and Enterprise plans)

Example: In a real estate management app, a user clicks Request an appointment. The action triggers Zapier, which sends a Slack notification to the realtor. Watch the video: configure a webhook URL through automation platforms like Zapier

Use these docs with your AI tools

An AI agent can read this documentation directly. You do not need an account or an API key. Everything here is public and read-only.

Query these docs via MCP

Recommended

Add this server to Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, Mistral, or any tool that supports MCP. Your agent can then search Softr Documentation documentation and read it in full, instead of answering from memory.

https://docs.softr.io/mcp
  • searchFind the passages that answer a question.
  • fetchRead one page in full, as Markdown.
  • list_pagesSee every page in this documentation.

Query these docs over HTTP

The same tools also work as plain web requests. Use this for scripts, or for any tool that does not support MCP. There is one endpoint per tool. Arguments go in the query string, and the answer comes back as JSON.

https://docs.softr.io/api/docs/search?query=custom+domain

Read the OpenAPI description. It is built from the same definitions as the tools, so it always matches what the endpoints do.

Read these docs as Markdown

Add .md to any page URL to get its Markdown source. You can also send the headerAccept: text/markdown to the page URL itself.

To read the whole documentation in one file, open llms-full.txt. For a short index of every page, open llms.txt.
