monday.com (beta)

Using monday.com as a data source for your Softr app.

What's in monday.com (beta)

  • support for boards, items, and sub-items
  • support for most of the Softr's dynamic blocks
  • read & write actions: create, read, update, one-click update, delete
  • syncing app users with a list of users stored in monday.com
  • working with associated boards using connected boards and Softr's conditional filters
👉
monday.com (beta) is available on all plans (subject to change upon full release).

Overview

monday.com is like a spreadsheet database and work management system that can also act as a relational database. As a result, it is a more powerful data management option when compared with simple spreadsheet solutions.

This integration allows you to:

  • give your clients real-time project visibility
  • collect information faster
  • create user-friendly dashboards without board limits

If you want to learn more about monday.com and its features, make sure to check out the official monday.com website.

Now, let's see how you can connect monday.com to your softr application, and then we'll take a closer look at some of monday.com’s features.

Connecting to monday.com

To connect your monday.com data to Softr you will need admin access in your monday.com workspace. Note that, any monday.com data source you connect in Softr can be used in all of the workspace’s apps, by all of the workspace’s collaborators.

Once you confirmed you have the right access, navigate to Administration > Connections > API to copy your Personal API Token. To learn more about this check this monday.com article.

When you have copied the API Token, navigate to Data sources settings from the Softr Dashboard.

On the next screen, you can see a list of all your connected data sources, as well as a button to add a new data source. Click Connect data source in the upper right of the screen. Select monday.com as your data source and paste your Personal API token. That’s it!

Once connected, monday.com will be available on new blocks and the new versions of existing blocks.

Fields and field types

When connecting a Softr block (e.g. a List block) to monday.com, you not only need to select a monday.com workspace and a board, but also map each block field to a corresponding monday.com field, to specify how exactly you want to display your data.

monday.com fields are basically the columns in the table, and each field has its predefined type such as Files, Status, Date, and more. Similarly, Softr also offers a wide variety of field types, and you need to make sure to select appropriate types when mapping fields from monday.com to Softr. Below, you can see how we’ve used an Image field type on Softr’s List block and linked it to the Photos field on monday.com, which has a File type.

You can learn more about Softr field types in the List block overview.

Computed fields

In general, most fields you can edit in monday.com are also editable in Softr. However, there are some exceptions. Fields that are automatically set by monday.com, such as Mirror fields, cannot be edited in Softr.

Additionally, certain fields in monday.com are read-only and cannot be edited in Softr. These include "Created by," "Created at," "Last updated," and "Item ID." While these fields can be displayed in Softr, they cannot be modified.

Currently, Formula fields, Progress fields, and Workdocs are not supported.

Connected boards

The Connected board field type on monday.com has a special role, and this is what makes monday.com a relational database. It allows you to link one board to another and show its record inside your current board.

For example, if we have two monday.com boards for Clients and Projects, we can create a Connected Board in Clients and connect it to Projects in order to show projects a Client is involved in.

Below, you can see the Clients table, where the Project field is a Connected board that shows records from the Projects table.

💡
It is important to note that Softr supports Connected board fields for all of its block types.

We hope that this brief overview helped you get a clearer picture of what monday.com is and how it serves as a data source for Softr.

Subitems

Subitems in monday.com help you add extra layers of information to your board items. You can sync these subitems to your Softr application as a Linked List.

To do this, ensure you have a page with your Items mapped to any Dynamic List block, along with a corresponding List Detail page mapped to the same board.

When you add a List block to this page, you’ll have the option to display either Items or Subitems.

If you choose Subitems, only the sub-items will be shown, automatically filtered based on the parent task details in the view. (This filtering applies in both the preview and the published app.)

Sub-items are shown as a Linked List.

Using monday.com and Softr templates

With this private beta launch, we don’t offer Softr templates yet. As a workaround, you can use Softr templates by copying data to a free Airtable account or Google Sheets. Then you can remap app blocks to be connected with monday.com.
